Sicangu Co is an indigenous ecosystem of interconnected organizations and initiatives dedicated to creating a healthier, more prosperous future for the Sicangu Lakota Oyate. Anchored in Lakota values and guided by the principles of self-sufficiency and community empowerment, Sicangu Co operates as a collective effort to strengthen the social, cultural, and economic well-being of the Rosebud Reservation.
Within the ecosystem lies Sicangu Community Development Corporation (Sicangu CDC), a nonprofit organization leading efforts to foster sustainable community development. Sicangu CDC focuses on food sovereignty, education, housing, and health while working collaboratively with other Sicangu Co entities to provide holistic support and opportunities for the community. Together, the ecosystem leverages shared resources, expertise, and partnerships to create impactful, lasting change.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Health Programming Coordinator will support the Sicangu Health Initiative’s (SHI) programming by providing educational sessions and hands-on demonstrations on physical health, fitness, nutrition, and cooking. Through supporting the Health Coaching Program, Home Gardens Program, and Youth Outdoor Adventure Program, this position will contribute to fostering healthier lifestyles and empowering community members through culturally relevant approaches to wellness. The Health Programming Coordinator will report to the Sicangu Health Initiative Director and work closely with program managers and staff across multiple departments within Sicangu CDC.
Key Responsibilities
● Deliver educational sessions on physical health, fitness, and nutrition tailored to program participants.
● Conduct cooking demonstrations to promote healthy eating habits and practical food preparation skills.
● Collaborate with program managers to support specific goals and objectives for each program.
● Help track participant progress and outcomes in health and wellness activities.
● Assist in planning and executing events and activities that enhance health and wellness engagement.
● Develop culturally relevant materials and resources to support program objectives.
● Foster relationships with community members and partners to enhance program visibility and impact.
● Perform other duties as assigned or approved by management.
Qualifications, Desired Knowledge and Skills
Required:
● Relevant experience in health education, fitness training, and cooking instruction.
● Demonstrated ability to lead cooking classes and physical fitness or exercise sessions.
● Knowledge of Indigenous approaches to health and wellness.
● Strong communication, teaching, and interpersonal skills.
● Ability to work collaboratively across multiple programs and with diverse participants.
● Practical understanding of nutrition, cooking, physical fitness, and holistic wellness.
● Experience facilitating workshops and engaging participants in hands-on learning.
● Proven ability to develop and deliver culturally responsive programming tailored to Indigenous communities.
Preferred:
● Prior experience working with Indigenous communities and incorporating Indigenous health methodologies.
● Certification or formal training in fitness instruction, health education, or culinary arts.
● Strong organizational skills with experience managing multiple tasks and priorities.
● Familiarity with developing culturally relevant materials and resources.
● Commitment to professional growth and continuous learning, particularly in Indigenous health and wellness.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
● This position is based on the Rosebud Reservation with opportunities for limited hybrid work.
● Flexibility to work evenings or weekends for program events and activities.
● Duties may include sitting for extended periods (up to 70%), standing during events or workshops (3–4 hours), driving to program sites and community events, and occasional lifting (up to 25 lbs).
● Local travel within the Rosebud community and occasional regional or national travel may be required.
