Economic and cultural revitalization, by and for the Siċaŋġu Lak̇ota Oyate
We began as the Rosebud Economic Development Corporation (REDCO), which is a chartered entity of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. REDCO — as an arm and instrumentality of the tribal government — is tasked with creating jobs, generating revenue, and creating economic opportunity for the Siċaŋġu Oyate.
In 2011, REDCO came under new leadership and a broader vision for the organization was born. At that time, we expanded our mission to include systems change aimed at addressing the root causes brought about by colonization. It became clear that the path forward required more than traditional economic development.
The expansion to community development necessitated the creation of two, legally-independent, but mission and value aligned organizations: Sicangu Community Development Corporation (Sicangu CDC) and Tatanka Funds, Inc.
Sicangu CDC is a community-based 501(c)3 nonprofit that reimagines the systems of food, health, education, and housing.
Tatanka Funds is an emerging Native CDFI with 501(c)3 designation that supports aspiring tribal entrepreneurs and homeowners through a series of educational and financial offerings.
As each organization grew, it became increasingly difficult to tell our story to our community, as well as our funders. Additionally, we realized that our place-based ecosystem was unique and that being able to communicate the interconnectedness of our work was essential, both for ourselves as well as our partners. From that, Siċaŋġu Co was born.
Siċaŋġu Co is the trademark for our ecosystem. REDCO, Sicangu CDC, and Tatanka Funds continue to exist and operate as independent legal entities, each with their own board of directors.
